What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment used to reduce pain and inflammation, encourage healing and improve function.
It involves the insertion of very fine needles at very specific points throughout the body. It is safe and effective and can be used as an alternative to medication.
There is nothing in or on the needle and nothing is injected. The needles themselves cause minimal or no discomfort.
Acupuncture Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the questions we hear the most about acupuncture.
How Does It Work?
The stimulation of specific points encourages your body to produce its own pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins. These chemicals block pain, reduce inflammation and promote healing.
Does It Hurt?
Most often it is not uncomfortable. As with many treatments people experience differing sensations. These sensations can vary from something less than a mosquito bite to a dull achy feeling. The needles are very fine and most often don’t even result in a drop of blood when removed.
What Is Acupuncture Used For?
It is effective at treating a variety of painful conditions that can be either acute or chronic. The treatment can be effective at easing: Low Back Pain, Neck Pain, Headache, Fibromyalgia, Whiplash and Carpal tunnel syndrome, Knee Pain, Shoulder Pain, Sciatica and other painful conditions.
Is It Covered By Insurance?
Many private insurance plans cover treatment. In some cases, the office is able to directly bill your insurance plan for the treatments. WCB and MPIC both cover acupuncture treatments.
